The bill would effectively give amnesty to landowners who illegally deforested areas before 2008, drawing the ire of environmentalists. If the legislation goes into effect, it could allow landowners in the Amazon to reduce obligatory forest cover to 50 percent from 80 percent, and could lead to the loss of as much as 190 million acres of forest, according to the government’s Institute for Applied Economic Research.…

How To Open A Bank Account Overseas

I recommended that you consider opening what I term an international bank account--that is, an account at a bank that isn't necessarily located where you're living. In fact, it can be better if it's not. This bank account, typically with a bank with offices around the world, is the best first step for any overall diversification plan. It's a place to park assets and capital privately and safely. And it's a separate thing from the other bank account you'll need in the country where you eventually…See More

“Before the health care law, many insurance companies spent excessive amounts of our premium dollars on administrative costs and profits, including executive salaries, overhead, and marketing—and not on our health care.” With the reform in place, more money must be spend directly on care, rather than pumping up executive pay and paying people to turn down claims. For those companies who spent less than 80 percent, they are now required to provide a rebate check to make up…

25 tips for travelling safely in Brazil

From various travel sources

.

Brazil is one of the least “hassly” countries I myself have ever lived in- and the only one I know where taxi drivers often round the price down and don’t expect a tip. The weather is generally great, the food and music excellent, people friendly and the scenery spectacular.

.

The only thing that seems to put more people off coming is the consistently bad press relating to violence and safety. Whilst no-one can guarantee the safety of travelers… Continue

Pousada - What is a pousada?

Posted by Donald Reid on October 18, 2009 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

Background

.

The word “Pousada” literally means “place to land”- or “place to stay”, and there are thousands of them throughout Brazil. The term encompasses places which in other places would be considered bed and breakfasts, or guesthouses/inns- as well as much more sophisticated places, more akin to boutique hotels. They are usually small, and very few will have more than 11 suites; some only have three or four.

.

Prices are usually similar to hotel prices. Where they… Continue

Bus Travel In Brasil

We worked in Acari, RN for 4 years

Whether you're a beginning farmer, or an experienced agricultural producer interested in transitioning to more sustainable practices, you may want to start by learning more about the principles of sustainable agriculture and some of the "systems" approaches associated with it.

Semi-ariid sertao region of northeast Brazil - Caatinga is the natural vegetation in the sertao region of the northeastern part of Brazil. The name "caatinga" is a indigenous word meaning "open forest" or "open vegetation". It covers about 700,000 km2. The Caatinga has a semi-arid climate with average annual temperatures of about 28 °C. The area has a very hot and dry winter and a hot and rainy summer. The rivers of the caatinga only run during the rainy summers and in some places the streams are interrupted during the dry winters. The vegetation consists mainly of open shrubs that are resistant to drought..

This was our main area of work for the ONG - Note that Acari is in the center

.

Originally inhabited (primitive) by Cariris Indians, the municipality of Acari was founded, as a small village, by Sargento-mor Manuel Esteves de Andrade, arriving there from Serra do Saco. In 1737 Manuel Esteves built a chapel for the new village, in respect of Nossa Senhora da Guia. April 11, 1835, the Municipality of Acari was created by a resolution of the Governor. This same year, or about, in the Imperial era, the following law was posted in the City Records (Código de Postura da Intendência Municipal da cidade de Acary) by an unknown author, which stated: “Em toda a cabeça de casal será obrigado a ter limpado as frentes de suas casas nas povoações, nas quatro festas, principalmente de cada um ano, sob pena de pagar por cada vez que faltar a limpeza, duzentos réis para as despesas da Câmara”. Basically translated, this states: "Every couple is obligated to clean in front of their houses in the village, especially for the four festas each year, with a fine each time they fail to do this cleaning, of two hundred reis for the expenses of the Câmara" (City government). People were obligated to maintain the cleanliness of the city. Therefore the legislation of the Império and of the old República required that all of the inhabitants maintain their homes and streets in good condition. . After time, the obligation became conscience with the title “CIDADE MAIS LIMPA DO BRASIL”, "CLEANEST CITY IN BRAZIL" the local population became extremely proud to live in Acari. . The majority of the population is sustained by retirement money. Still with the economic difficulties, in 1971, they received the title “CIDADE MAIS LIMPA DO BRASIL”, "CLEANEST CITY IN BRAZIL" and the topic of the era was “Nesta cidade o ‘Sugismundo’ não pode morar” or "those that are dirty can not live here", created by the mayor of that time, Sr. José Braz de Albuquerque Galvão Filho. This same time there was a report issued by Rede Globo (TV) about the newest title given the city. Again in 1995, the city one more time gained attention of the “Jornal do Comércio”, of Pernambuco, which illustrated an editorial with a similar opinion of this journal

Ecological Reserve RPPN -SERNATIVO - ACARI

This is an old project I have been working on since 2005. It is becoming more and more feasible but will cost a bit to implant as I will now have to travel to Brasilia (the capital) to talk with the government agencies INCRA and IBAMA. I work for IBAMA as an ecological consultant for over 28 years. The reserve is the only 'caatinga' reserve in Rio Grande do Norte.

JACUMA, PARIABA

Another interesting beach area is Jacuma, Paraiba. Jacuma is about 22 Km south of the capital city of Paraiba, João Pessoa. It is now mostly vacation, weekend homes for people from the city and interior of state. It is the perfect area for people that want easy and fast access to all a city offers but don't want to live there. it is still essentially a fishing village which means land prices and building costs are substantially lower than in the city. In fact, this entire area is the most economical area to buy beach front or view properties this close to a major city in the Northeast.

Personally, if I find the right partner I am thinking about my company Andetur investing here in a pousada.

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand." -- Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of USA.
And I remembered my dream from decades ago: to establish a mecca for the international traveler, a community where we were the "natives", where we didn't feel like foreigners, where we all could do something, where nobody would have to be afraid of the question "What do you do?", where nobody would feel as though he were incomplete or unnecessary or a burden, where we would feel whole and in control and useful and wanted, and from where WE could enrich the world.....Donald Reid

Sustainable Travel International

Enhanced with Snapshots

Passion is key. A nonprofit will best be able to serve people and fulfill its mission when the Board, staff, and volunteers are all passionate about the cause. Our first activity of the day helped reconnect everyone with their love for the organization.

Mission takes money. In order to fulfill our mission, we must have money. Unfortunately, many members are intimidated or downright scared to get involved in fundraising. When members understand that there are lots of ways they can participate in fundraising without actually giving someone a gift, they start to relax. Once they understand how fundraising works, they can find a spot where they feel comfortable participating.

People give for a variety of reasons. Part of our teaching of our ONG staff members helps them understand the myriad of reasons why people give. We dispelled the myth that people give for the tax benefit alone.

And the main theme is: Good fundraising is based on relationships. Our donors are our partners in serving people. The better we engage them, the more we develop relationships, which builds loyalty and keeps them involved for the long haul.

When our members feel like part of our marketing team — rather than like outsiders — we'll be much more likely to get the support and budget we need to execute the campaigns we know will make the greatest impact. And no matter how skilled we are, we just can't succeed without that support.

“For those who believed that Brazil would forever be the country of the future, I have a piece of bad news. The future has finally arrived.” For years, the largest and most industrialized nation in Latin America has been known as the country of tomorrow. That slogan is out of date.

Under the guidance of former finance minister and president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, this tenth largest economy in the world, once known for its high tariffs and even higher inflation, has entered a period of steady growth, the fruit of a newly-stable political and commercial environment.

Ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva prioritized development of many industries, including tourism related projects.

In combination with the upturn in its economy, Brazil ’s demonstrated preference for foreign products and strong direct investment presence bode well for expanded sales of equipment and services in future years.

EcoVilla Project

We are thinking about creating a group that will buy a property near Acari, Rio Grande do Norte, for the creation of a EcoVilla. Since 2005 the ONG has been trying to save an ecological reserve located on the shores of Gargalheiras Lake, 4 km from Acari, with the same name. A friend of mine bought the ranch next door to the reserve and suggested the possibility of creating a small community of ecological minded persons. This is my answer to this suggestion.
